role in the creation of an American national identity in the early  
20th century. Art colonies in Old Lyme and Cos Cob, Connecticut and  
Ogunquit and Monhegan, Maine were inspiration for nationally  
recognized artists including Edward Hopper, Childe Hassam, Robert  
Henri, and George Bellows, among others. The exhibition will chronicle  
the development of impressionist Connecticut and modernist Maine and  
will feature 74 works drawn from the collections of the Portland  
Museum of Art and the Florence Griswold Museum, Old Lyme, Connecticut.

(1815-1879) was recognized as one of the leading photographers of her  
era and today is regarded as one of finest portraitists of the medium.  
This album, made for her sister Maria Jackson (affectionately known as  
Mia) includes family portraits and allegorical works, such as her  
famous series on Mia's daughter, who later became the mother of the  
writer Virginia Woolf. In addition, the album features images of some  
of the most celebrated figures of Victorian England - among them the  
poet Alfred Tennyson and the Pre-Raphaelite painter George Frederic

raising environmental awareness along the way. The event is a series  
of canoe treks. July 9-13 runs from Shelburne to Gilead to Hanover to  
Rumford to Bethel to Mexico and to Dixfield. July 25-26 is in the  
Auburn area. August 7-9 includes the Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge.  
And August 22-23 returns to Lewiston/Auburn for the annual Great Falls

race competition of 6 miles, with possible class I rips and easy class  
II rapids. Entry fee is $15 per person. Entries received before  
Monday, July 6 will receive a race T-shirt and lunch. Race-day  
registration is $18 and includes lunch only. No t-shirts for race-day  
registrants, though merchandise is available. Several sandwich/ice  
cream shops are within half a mile of the take-out site. Race day  
registration starts at 9:00 a.m. at the Durham Boat Launch on Rte. 136  
near the Auburn/Durham line. (This launch site is not the Durham River  
Park also on Rte. 136.) Leave enough time to get on the river for the  
11:00 a.m. mass start. The race finish is just under the railroad  
trestle where the Sabattus River joins the Androscoggin on Rte. 196 in
