hallmarks of Jay Connaway's (1893-1970) unique style of masculine  
impressionism. Featuring 25 paintings, this is the first major museum  
exhibition of Connaway's work since his death. Born in Indiana,  
Connaway studied in New York under William Merritt Chase and in Paris  
at the Academie Julian before returning to native soil and landing in  
New England. A student of the sky, waves, and snow-covered hills of  
Maine and Vermont, Connaway belonged to the generation that presented  
the region as timeless and quiet in the face of modernity and ensured  
that the image of New England maintained a prominent role in the

Oct 10 thru Jan 03, 2010. Charles DuBack (born 1926) first came to  
Maine from New York City in the mid-1950s. The exhibit will feature 20  
paintings and collages focusing on his rarely shown, but pivotal, work  
from the late 1950s. The exhibition is complemented by a small  
selection of his more recent watercolors from 1998 depicting the woods  
that surround his home in Tenants Harbor. These two bodies of work,  
although separated by decades, are related in conception and are the  
result of DuBack's response to the landscape of Maine. This is the  
Portland Museum of Art's first exhibition devoted to that seminal  
period when New York post-war modernism arrived in Maine. For info

Shaolin Warriors bring the remarkable skill, stunning movement and

Kung Fu masters have trained from a very young age in mental and

Oct 16 thru Oct 18, 2009. A site specific installation and shadow play  
performance by College of the Atlantic faculty member Dru Colbert,  
beginning at twilight in Acadia National Park's Otter Cove on Mount  
Desert Island. Based on actual events that occurred on Mt. Desert  
Island in 1867, this piece explores themes of fate and destiny, of  
human lives linked to the sea. Students, staff and faculty at College  
of the Atlantic and many other members of the Mt. Desert Island  
community helped to conceive and perform this piece. Admission is  
free. Voluntary donations will benefit the Otter Creek Aid Society.  
Audience members are asked to dress warmly and comfortably, carry a  
flashlight or headlamp, and bring a folding chair or extra blanket for  
seating if desired. The "sit down" performance of a shadow play with  
puppets and live action will last approximately 45 minutes. The entire  
performance will last 1.5 hours. The same performance occurs each

1920's are drawing to a close. The Master of Ceremonies welcomes the  
audience to the show and assures them that, whatever their troubles,  
they will forget them at the Cabaret. His songs provide wry commentary  
throughout the show. On the train to Berlin we find Cliff, a young  
American writer, and Ernst, a German who surprises Cliff by putting  
his briefcase among Cliff's luggage at the German border. History is  
in the process of being made. Musical numbers include It Couldn't  
Please Me More, Willkommen, Cabaret, Don't Tell Mama and Two Ladies.  
We find Cliff on the train again, now leaving Berlin alone. He writes  
about Sally and the people of Berlin leading up to the Third Reich. It  
has been a tumultuous and heartbreaking era. Map + Directions

star Marian Ames along with Lilly, Jo, Topeka and her niece, Katie  
from the Hollywood Canteen entertain the troops with the rip- 
roaringest USO show of them all. Swingtime Canteen features the music  
of the greatest tunesmiths of the big band era and takes its  
inspiration from the films and personalities that helped to define the  
national consciousness know as "the war effort." Performances at 8
