hallmarks of Jay Connaway's (1893-1970) unique style of masculine  
impressionism. Featuring 25 paintings, this is the first major museum  
exhibition of Connaway's work since his death. Born in Indiana,  
Connaway studied in New York under William Merritt Chase and in Paris  
at the Academie Julian before returning to native soil and landing in  
New England. A student of the sky, waves, and snow-covered hills of  
Maine and Vermont, Connaway belonged to the generation that presented  
the region as timeless and quiet in the face of modernity and ensured  
that the image of New England maintained a prominent role in the

few local farmers and merchants got together and decided to show off  
their produce, cattle and wares to the community. Since those humble  
beginnings, Fryeburg Fair has grown to become Maine's largest  
agricultural fair complete with six days of harness racing, a farm  
museum second to none, the world's largest steer and oxen show and a

Mental Illness Awareness Walk

Oct 04, 2009. We are walking to raise awareness and erase the stigma  
of mental illness. People are welcome to raise pledges, collect  
donations or just come and walk to support the cause. Registration is  
free. The first 200 registrants will receive a free T-shirt and there  
will be a free BBQ immediately following the walk. All money raised  
from the walk will be donated to local shelters, Rachel's House and  
the Acadia Recovery Center in Bangor, ME. Everyone is welcome. The

Brooks Historical Society Heritage Day Open House

Oct 04, 2009. Brooks Historical Society will hold its annual Fall  
Heritage Day Open House with craftspeople at work from 1 p.m. to 4  
p.m. at the Pilley House, 11 Moosehead Trail. Visitors will see old- 
time crafts peformed in a friendly setting. Many interesting items,  
research materials and memorabilia are on display. Videos of  
interviews with local people are available. Free refreshments will be  
served on the porch. There is no admission fee, but free-will  
donations are gratefully accepted. The following craftspeople will be  
demonstrating: Margie Sherman, spinning on great wheel; Mike Shannon,  
spinning on support wheel; Jolene Bryant, spinning on Saxon wheel;  
Susie Stephenson, primitive rug hooking; Susie Gowie, embroidery;

Sponsor Clark Insurance present the Chamber's 8th Annual Live & Silent  
Auction and Sebago Lakes Signature Dishes buffet dinner. This  
anticipated public event promotes local business while raising funds  
for the Chamber's community activities. Signature Dishes buffet begins  
at 6 p.m. and features many local restaurants and food service  
providers serving appetizers, chowder, salad, main dishes and  
desserts. The Silent Auction includes gift certificates, baskets and  
items from more than 100 businesses. The Live Auction runs from 8 p.m.  
to 9 p.m. and will feature lively bidding on a wide range of higher  
value items. Entertainment throughout the evening. Tickets are $20

Sep 25 thru Oct 04, 2009. Richard Sewell tells the story of the first  
naval clash between the American colonists and the British that took  
place in Machias, Maine in June, 1775. A Machias merchant is  
accompanied by a British warship as he returns with supplies to  
Machias ,which teeters on the brink of starvation. Learning that their  
lumber is to be used to build barracks for the British, the desperate  
townspeople refuse to sell and erect a Liberty Pole to commemorate the  
fighting at Lexington and Concord. When the British ship fires on the  
town, the townsfolk marshal their meager military resources and  
capture the ship - the first captured war vessel of the Revolution.
